2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Feedback
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our audience.
The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is vast, having devoted the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to persist observing the development of the game in the time to come.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Face the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that shift every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game has not yet received an confirmed launch window or consoles, but players can anticipate further news as production continues.
