British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
