EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
