Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
