In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
