Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
