As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
